It is time for hurricane season in the US again, and I can't help finding it fascinating! I know, a lot of people loose their homes and it's so sad. At the same time, the power of those are incredible! It's just breath taking what mother nature can bring on!
For those who want to know more about Hurricane Irene (aiming for New York), take a look at StormPulse.
In the Swedish newspaper DN, I read the thing I was hoping I wouldn't read this time around... "Kampen om oljan tar ny fart" (The "battle" about the oil starts again). I know that I'm naive, but I was seriously hoping the oil would not play a big role in what's going on in Libya. I know, humans are egocentric, nasty little things, but at some stage they should surprise me, right? I'm still hoping! But I guess that's why we're helping the poeple over there, and leave others to starve to death... I think it's just nasty!
I've also found out that one of my ex boyfriends just gotten married. That was a big surprise to me, but I'm happy for him. The woman is the one he met after me, and I think he might have cheated with. But that is just based on the fact that she told me, at a party, that "I've seen your boyfriend's ****". At that time I just thought she was silly so I just said "Lucky you". After we broke up and they got together, I thought of that time and perhaps she tried to tell me something??? Wouldn't been the first time I'm slow to understand... :D Anyway, big surprise that he is married! :O
What else? Aaaah, the most important thing of all times: AstroPub! Things just can't go wrong with the guys from astronomy! People got so happy when I showed up! Talk about biiiig self-confidence boost! Both of my bachelor thesis supervisors were there. Me verrrrrrry happy! :) :) :) This was actually the first time I had the opportunity to talk to them about my thesis, because I was in Australia when I sent it in. They seem to think that it was very good and ambitious for being a Bachelor thesis. That was good! I guess the level is higher now with my master thesis... :S
There was also a very drunk guy who hit on me there, not from the Astrophysics department though! He was complaining about all the new students in Uppsala, and their "nollning" (the first weeks the student have different activities and can be quite loud). He said that he is too old for that, so I asked how old he was. He said 28, but must have forgotten me asking, because a couple of minutes later he wanted me to guess his age. I said 28, and he got blown away by my good guessing skills... :D He asked me about my age and I said 30. I got an "Auoooch" as an answer. :D Not really sure how to interpret that though :D
I really had a great time at the AstroPub, as always! I realized how much I've missed all of them! On my way home, my train was cancelled, so it took me forever to get home!
Are you interested in astronomy?

Founded as early as 1477, it is the oldest such institution in the Nordic countries, and for centuries has been one of Europe's most renowned seats of learning. One of the main centres of higher education in Europe, the university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a Great Power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki. Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three 'disciplinary domains'. It has about 40,000 students (20 000 full-time eq.), and about 2,000 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of 4,000 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,000 employees. Of its annual turnover of around 4.3 billion SEK (approx. 715 million USD), approximately 60% goes to graduate studies and research. Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in the area around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala's historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university. Source: Wikipedia |
